Steel Roofing

Thinking about putting on steel roofing on an asphault shingled ell. My neighbor did his whole house and he raves about how well the snow and ice slide off, and I have to agree. But I'm wondering in the long term if the coating would wear of and leave the steel to the weather and we all know what happens to bare steel when exposed to the elements. Looking for a few opinions.....

You can get galvanized steel roofing sheets, but it has to be painted or it will eventually rust. If you keep it painted, it will last forever.
You can get steel roofing with baked-on enamel paint (comes in a variety of colors) with a 20-year warranty, so that you don't have to paint it for that long.
You can get aluminum roofing that will never rust or need painting. It is extruded and the sheets are custom-cut to the exact length ordered.
Use galvanized metal roofing nails or screws with the rubber washer with the galvanized, and aluminum nails or screws with the rubber washers for the aluminum roofing. Unlike metals will corrode each other.
Good luck!

Steel roofing will out last shingles 2 to 1. They are primed before painting and the chances of rust are very small. There is one thing about a steel roof, and that is it will not leak.
