outdoor wood project

I have just completed a wood project, a cat shelter to be used in a cat pen outside. Though I probably should have selected a different kind of wood, I selected pine and it is done. So now how do I finish it so that it does not mildew and rot. It will be up off the ground, it's back to our house, covered with roofing material on top, inside a cat pen that is covered with a tarp but I'm sure it will still be affected by the elements (NJ shore weather). I've done nothing to it yet so I'll wait to see if someone has an answer for me.Thanks so much, Kate.

Cool

Untreated pine is a soft wood, and will rot easily in a damp environment.
You might want to prime and paint the exterior to keep it "waterproof" on the outside.
Good Luck!
