Question Carpet on Stairway

I am carpeting a basement. However I have concerns about carpeting the stairway going to the basement. My dog seems to think the stairway is turn 4 of the Daytona 500 and I am worried that he will either wear the carpet out or ruin it. Does anyone have any suggestions on a type of carpet that is best for this type of condition? I am going to use an 6lb pad throughout for cushion.

Wood steps with a wool runner, or buy wool for the steps.

A frieze, or a cable, yarn construction. Less tip blossoming, and the matted look.

Stay clear of loop piles, or some refer to it as "berber" Toe nail snags!!!

Cut pile, plush, saxony, and trackless may look matted down in a shorter period of time.
