can you insulate under a carpet?

I just bought a home with a crawl space, no insulation down there ! (Insulation contractrs probably won't be available before winter either)

I've ordered new carpet and I have already taken up the old carpet and pad. Would it do any good to put down the reflective type insulation (the thin bubble type sandwiched between foil) ?

I know the flloors will be cold !

How about a 1/2 inch fiber pad for the carpet...

I took a sample of insulation to the installer, he pointed out several reasons it may not be a good idea.

He suggested felt. I'm a bit leary because crawl spaces are normally humid.

Any thoughts on the felt?
