Baseboard before carpet installation??

I have read many places that you should install baseboard before carpet goes in. We are having a berber installed in our basement in a few weeks and need to know if I should do it first.

AT our last house, I put it in after the carpet was installed. I liked that way it worked because I was able to butt the baseboard right down to where the carpet started. I don't have any of the new carpet that is going in so I'm not sure how much of a gap to leave if I put it in now.

Is there any rhyme or reason to doing it first or a good reason why I shouldn't do it after?

Ok, I feel like an idiot because I just noticed a similar post right below mine.... sorry folks.

Still would like to know why you shouldn't install baseboard after carpet though.

Because whoever installs the carpet may install the tackstrip too close, then when the baseboards went down, it would pinch the carpet causing all kinds of problems if it ever needed restretching or whatever.....

Baseboard before carpet

And, if baseboard is installed up off floor a distance about as thick as the baseboard, carpet edge can be tucked under baseboard for a very tidy, professional look.

Question what if.....

either way, before OR after, the carpet edge is tucked/hidden under the baseboards for a tidy look.

what if, when he put the baseboards in (after the carpet) he was really careful to not pinch them down too snugly against the carpet (leaving maybe 1/8" gap)? then would it be okay?

just wondering, because if i had a choice (like he does), i'd be thinking i'd put the baseboards in AFTER the carpet, because in our first house, we had really beautiful, tall, painted white baseboards (old house) and the carpetlayers scuffed the daylights out of our freshly painted woodwork. i swore, in the future, if i ever had a choice, the baseboards would be going in after the carpet.....

still say "no"??

(sorry to be a pain.....just curious & wanting to learn!)

Base board in first all the time. 1/2 "up off floor. Carpet guys will cut and tuck the carpet right in under it. Never build a home where you have to go and work over the new carpet.

Thumbs up

okay! okay!! you win!

all i know is, i painted our old baseboards while the old carpet was down (so i wouldn't have to have an open paint can around my NEW carpet), only to have to open that danged can of paint AGAIN, over my NEW carpet, to touch up all the scuffs!!!

but what you say makes sense, too, i guess! thanks for explaining!

1/2 inch is TOO MUCH!!!

no matter how thick your carpet is...no more than 1/4-3/8. Please.

I'm in the process of doing my baseboards (closed in my garage). It's a little more than 3/8. If I made the terriable mistake of making it too high, is it customary to do qtr. round on carpet?
