carpet seam sealer

I'm about to install berber carpeting in a 15' x 17' room. The carpet store ordered carpet in 12' widths leaving three ~4' pieces for me to seam (i.e. one long seam with two short ones). First question, is this a normal thing to do rather than get a 17' x 4' piece to fit in here (cut from a 12' roll)? I realize it is to reduce waste but I'm afraid the 3 seams will really show - especially the ones running perpendicular.

I just ordered some carpet tools and realize that I may have not ordered seam sealer. Is it really necessary if you do a good job cutting between the rows or is it a good idea for any seam job? How much sealer would I need for approximately 35' of seam work and how is it applied?

Thanks in advance!
