Area rug on top of carpet: What kind of pad?

My living room has some truly tragic red carpeting that was here when we moved in. It's tragic because it's 40 years old, wool, must have been expensive, and it's still in good shape.

But it's red.

So I purchased an inexpensive Oriental-style rug to put on top of it to mitigate the

red

red

bright red

somewhat, and I'm assuming I need some kind of pad.

I intend to recarpet at some point, though not in the next year or so. So I don't want to ruin the carpet underneath.

What kind of pad should I get?

None! I assume the original carpet has some type of under padding. Too much cushion becomes a trip hazard as your foot sinks deeper into the rug.

Also laying a rug over a carpet is going to do wierd things to the carpet beneath it, especially if there is going to be traffic over it.
