I need to find out how much carpet i'll need to do a set of stairs that has a landing about 4 stairs down and then a 90 degree turn going another 9 stairs.

The easiest way is to measure the dimensions of one step and riser. Measure the riser from the top of the second to the top of the first step. This will take in account the material needed to cover the nose of the step. Multiply this by 13 and you have the amount of carpet needed to cover the stairs. Then, measure the size of the landing and add this to the stair measurement and add 10% to the total and you should have the amount needed.

Is this a runner?
if so, will there be a 90 degree angle and seam?
is there a pattern in the carpet?
NEED to know this

Rule: # of stairs times 1.5 (12 steps=18')
I always added a few inches.
Not all stairs are standard though. some are custom. CHECK!
