remove glued down carpet

The carpet in my basement is glued to the cement floor. When I pull up the carpet, large parts of the rubber backing stays on the floor. How can I get the carpet and backing up without using strong chemical adhesive removers?

Avoid chemical adhesive removers. The rubber backing will stick to the floor, take the carpet up in two steps. First the pile layer, then deal with the foam. Remove the foam rubber backing with a 4" razor scraper. They are available in the paint and wallpaper section of most stores. Buy some replacement blades too.
