Matted carpet

Does anyone know of a way to improve matted carpet. I bought a house that has a few areas of matted carpet and was hoping I could fix it and not have to replace it. Thanks

Matted carpet usually occurs in high traffic areas such as hallways, stairs, and doorways. Oily residues are everywhere in the air. These are produced by vehicles, factories, power plants, cooking, wood smoke. These particles settle into carpet. Without regular professional cleaning, the sticky, oily particles will cause fibers to mat together. If in high traffic areas, the traffic further mats the fibers. Grit tracked onto carpet fibers stick to the oily residue and abrades the fibers when walked upon. The matted areas become worn. The EPA recommends annual professional cleaning and every 3-6 months if children or pets are present. Once carpet becomes matted and fibers crushed, the damage is irreversible.

Replacing the worn carpet cushion may buy you some extra time with the carpet, but the crushing is permanent. Professional cleaning will also improve the appearance of the carpet.
