protect carpeted stairs

My stair well is a high traffic area from the front entry to the main part of the house. My carpet is barely a month old and is showing a lot of dirt and wear. I'd like to put a protective clear vinyl runner on it. I purchased a short piece to try it out, but I can't figure out how to "tack" in place. The carpet is a burber. It seems like nails or staples might pull thru the vinyl? Two sided tape perhaps? Any great suggestions?

I bet your carpet is an olefin or polyester berber.....i have seen those protectors..but never over carpet...im sure if you put small stainless washers around the fastners that would keep it from pulling thru the plastic
