How complicated is it to remove carpet? Is it best to have it done professionally?

It shouldn't be that hard. The hardest part is getting rid of it once its off the floor. The regular garbage services want it to be cut into small (about a square foot or so) pieces.

Removing carpeting should not be complicated at all. It is however a lot of physical work. If the carpet is installed over padding, simply take a pair of plyers and pull up one corner. Then simply pull the carpet away from the tack strip all around the room. The easiest way to remove it from the room is to cut it into pieces that are easy to handle. Use a sharp shop knive and push down hard when cutting. You have to get through the carpet fiber and backing for it to come apart in pieces.

If the carpet is glued to the floor, get back to me privately and I'll tell you what to do.
