I know this is a DIY site but they don't cost enough for me to consider making one instead of buying one and I would bet many share my opinion.

Ya, I had a friend years ago that made one - it about killed his knee
I don't remember the price but I saw awhile back where Harbor Freight had one for sale at a reasonable price. It might not be stout enough for commercial use but it's probably fine for a diyer.

They said a stretcher, not a kicker. Two different tools. If you don't use a kicker right you can hurt yourself. A kicker won't get carpet tight anyway. A homemade stretcher or kicker would not be easy to make. Better to rent one.

Hadn't thought of renting, that would be the way to go if you're not going to be re-using it.

We use a knee kicker (which we own) when we put back down a corner we have taken up because of a problem. We hire carpet to be stretched, if needed (and, clearly, when first installed).

I think we paid $35 for the one we have - you put in way more work than I would be willing to for that amount.

He should see the photos of my friend's knee after surgery from using a kicker. I quit using one many years ago. Besides, you cannot get carpet tight with one.
