Removing Adhesive Residues

Hello everyone, my eldest son recently moved into his first own appartment. The previous tenants used to have a big carpet in the living room, which was affixed to the floor tiles. We tried to get rid of the carpet but we couldn't remove all the adhesive residues - not even with intense brushing and cleaning supplies. Do you have any special tips for removing real tenacious adhesive residues?

Welcome to the forums.

I see you're here from across the pond.

Removing carpet adhesives is not an easy job. You will need a solvent to dissolve it. There are cleaners like Goo Gone that may work but aren't very strong.

Other products like lacquer thinner and lighter fluid need to be used carefully in a well ventilated area.

As with your bathroom painting question, I'm answering on the assumption this is not rental property. If it is, please consult the landlord.

Here's my canned answer to your question - mineral spirits, a scraper, lots of elbow grease and good ventilation.

I agree with the mineral spirits, elbow grease [may require more than you want to find] and plenty of fresh air ventilation.

Try WD-40. It will remove many adhesives.

WD40 definitely works to dissolve adhesives, I recommended mineral spirits since you likely will use quite a bit and it's cheaper.

Just about any kind of oil will work to remove adhesive. I would use plan old cooking oil in this case, talk about the inexpensive route. But you will have to do a secondary cleaning with soap and water to remove the oilyness left behind, you don't want the floor to be slick when you are done.

I'll have to wholeheartedly disagree with using oil to remove adhesives. While oil may soften some adhesives, you absolutely do not want the oil soaking into the subflooring. You won't be able to remove it with your soap and water solution.

The oil won't soak thru the tiles. They are cleaning tile, not wood. But I still would not use cooking oil. The fish oil left by WD 40 is not hard to clean up.
