Old stairs are no problem for installing carpet. Now as far as the sides, are you talking about the stringers on the wall going up a staircase or exposed from looking from a room below and perpendicular to the stairs?

yes im talking about the wood on the sides of the stairs. just want to cover up all that old ugly wood. not the stringers. see alot of people do the sides of the stairs so no wood is showing.

Thumbs up

Upholster them with carpet. It takes good knife skills and depending on the situation, the use of contact cement or an upholstery stapler will be needed. If you have spindles it gets real tricky. Besure to tackstrip around every spindle. The seam around the spindles should run front to back, not to the side of the stair tread.
