Moisture in carpet on concrete slab

I have a ranch house on a slab. We're currently redoing the flooring in the house. We had new carpet installed in the master bedroom. In order to protect the carpeting from dirt while working on the rest of the house we put plastic over the carpet. After about 4 weeks the carpet is wet. The house was built in 1958, and there is a layer of vinyl composition tile over the concrete.
I'm wondering if this could be normal vapor emissions that we trapped by creating a vapor barrier on top of the carpet, or if I need to pull up the carpet and use some other type of flooring?

Yes, I would say the poly is what trapped moisture. If the poly had not been there, there would be no problem.
