Stripping carpet backing from stairs
Hi everyone,
Months ago i ripped out carpet from my basement including the stairs. I am looking to clean up the stairs and just paint them, but the black carpet backing is stuck to the wood on the stairs. I am wondering the best way to strip the stairs before I paint them. I have scraped off what I can but there is some that still remains.
Thanks in advance.

If it's just the pad sticking and not adhesive I'd use an orbital sander.
You would need to play with the grit to get something aggressive enough to remove the foam but not completely clog up the paper!

if it is a black residue that is somewhat like tar, I had luck with some Dawn dishsoap in a gallon of water and a scrubber sponge. Use a scraper to get off what you can first then use the soap solution. My carpet pad had started to break down and left this mess. If yours is simply foam padding that is hardened, then a scraper then sanding might be best.
