Small Areas to Fix Before Carpet Squares

I've got some small areas to fill in before installing peel & stick type carpet squares. They will be going over old tiles, probably from the 50's.
Don't want to buy a big bag of floor leveler so what else could I use to patch up a couple areas with about half tiles missing? Could I fit some thin paneling in those spots and maybe caulk around it?
The new carpet squares are about a quarter inch thick.

How deep are the holes?
Self-leveling concrete doesn't work well on super shallow areas.
also, what type of room is it? Will there be exposure to water? (Assuming not if using carpet, but have to ask.)

As deep as one old tile that's been torn up, so not real deep, less that a quarter inch. It's a spare bedroom, no water exposure.
Found some "White Dependable Skim Coat" - would that work? Have never tried to use it before.

Definitely not self-leveling concrete at less than 1/4 inch. Probably going to need something that can flex a bit with the floor.
I'll check with the better half to see what the name of the product we used on our second floor.

Thanks, it's maybe an eighth of an inch deep in a few places. These are the old 9 inch tiles and guess they put them all over the house in those days.
I'm pulling carpet staples right now trying to get it all smoothed out.
