Looking at the various offerings for carpet cleaners - i.e. uses a surfactant solution, among the models that are configured like an upright vacuum is there one that's made solidly - effective and will last? Or do you have to go to something like a Rug Doctor to get one that really works. I've rented in the past, it's just a chore to have to lug it home and back to the store.

Cant speak for the larger upright machines but with kids and pets we've gone through several of the small spot cleaners over the past 40 years. They dont do large areas but are invaluable for those spot cleaning needs.

if you want save money and get good results stick with the RD. Several years ago wife bought a Bissel unit. Think she only used it once! Never heard of bad results with RD if used properly.
