Baseboard to floor gap

We are finishing our basement and having carpet installed in one room. I've read that the baseboard should be installed first. What should the proper gap be, if any, between the bottom of the baseboard and the floor? Our floor is concrete, and we'll be using a felt pad with a fairly inexpensive berber carpet(two dogs and young kids!).

Thumbs up

The gap should be as thick as the carpet. It makes for a cleaner installation when the baseboards are raised off the floor. 1/4"-1/2" should do just fine. Make it enough to tuck the carpet under the baseboard.
