Are there differences between different carpet types in terms of dust creation?
I am assuming that carpets create dust by walking on them?
I tried to find out whether there is a difference between fibers, and type. Most articles I find are more about differences on how much dust carpets capture.

Carpets are a big producer of dust plus they are great at capturing dust which gets thrown back in the air when disturbed that is an advantage of hard flooring.
Which is better, I'm sure the man made materials are better and the shorter the nap probably helps!

The backing is where I think dust creation comes from. When it breaks down it creates coarse dust. Luckily it's mostly trapped beneath the carpet. As for the carpet fibers they are pretty durable, large and long and do not create dust. In general I think most of the dust is from other sources that happens to land on the carpeting and doesn't get removed. So, I think the more appropriate question is about cleaning. Do you have a good vacuum? Do you vacuum frequently?

Having lived in houses with all sorts of different carpets (expensive, cheap, small pile, shag, berber, etc), I don't think the type of carpet really impacts dust much. I agree with Dane that most/all of the dust is not generated by the carpet, but by the people, pets, and environment.
So frequent vacuuming is important as well as the occasionally deep cleaning.
