Fairly close

The furnace is in the basement. They (fireplace and furnace) share a chimney though each have their own flue.

Fireplace smoke through heating duct

I have a 40 y.o house. This year when I burn a fire in the fireplace (central chimney) and the heater (oil heat) comes on there is heavy smoke smell upstairs.
