It was the CO alarm in the basement that went off, situated beside the furnace room. We had unknowingly left the switch to the 'pilot' position instead of the off...with no flame on....

I agree I would rather run a new cable however, only a couple of feet would be needed and the cost of throwing out all that cable is kind of painful!
