Problem solved

Thanks again for all the replies,

I went to HF today and bought a $9 heat gun. Using low heat I was able to get the hard PVC to turn pliable in about a minute. When it turned from white to...

More info and pics

Thanks to all for your replies.

I had the time to take another look today. The cable is round, not flat, and about 7/16" in diameter. The two feet or so I was able to see had absolutely no...

Thanks for the reply.

Anything I do with a razor knife invariably nicks the insulation on the conductors. I tried using my tubing cutter to make a ring around the plastic so I could snap it off,...

Condenser fan motor weeping oil

Hello all,

During my ritualistic cleaning of the leaves from inside my condenser, I noticed that the fan motor has been weeping oil. It was enough that it came up and obscured the nameplate on...

HF comes to the rescue again. I should have looked there first, before posting. Thanks Furd, for the links. And Grady, yes that tach I was referring to was one I saw used to adjust idle speed on a...

Contact tachs

I remember them! Basically, just an adjustable wire and tube. Set the wire to a certain length, touch it to the motor, and see if it vibrates, right? A scale on the handle measured rpm. (?)

Thanks

I just wanted to know if there was a tool like an automotive timing light that lets you check actual rpm. On the rare occasion I have to replace a coupler, I put a chalk mark on the end I can see...

Testing motor speed?

Hello again,

I would like to know if there is an easy (and cheap) way to test that an oil pump motor is running at its rated rpm? Also, are there any cool tricks to check if a coupler is...

Looking for Suntec pump diagram

Hello all,

Suntec has a lot of great info on the internet, but the one thing I just can't seem to find is a diagram - sometimes called the exploded view - of their A1VA-7000 series pumps. Is...

A few more questions

Thanks Grady,

Is vacuum a good indicator of how hard a pump is having to work? If so, I was thinking of installing a vacuum gauge permanently as a heads-up against future filter/line clogging. I...

Hello again,

I put the new pump on today and tested for vacuum at the second intake port after bleeding the pump. I got 2" Hg, which is well within spec. If I understand correctly, this would...

Vacuum check

Hi Grady,

I picked up a Suntec A1YA-7912 today for just under $80. I have flushed the intake line with compressed air and carb cleaner. No check valve, but the first time I tried to blow it out...

Thanks Grady,

As usual, great info. I think I have a high lift and long run problem. Six years ago a tech converted our formally two line supply to single. Since then, when I change fuel...

Fuel pump: One line or two?

Hello all,

Is there any benefit to a two line set-up on a fuel pump? I think I read in this forum that a one line system is always better unless a two line set-up is required, which might be my...

Nice to hear from you. How have you been? Yes, I'm working on the horizontal Thermo-Pride again. I checked the damper for plumb and level, as Furd suggested, and made the necessary...

Thanks,
It's probably a little of both. I'm going to check the face of the damper to see if it's level. Then I'm going to adjust for draft as best as I can. Should I adjust that little tab so...

Question Barometric Damper Adjustment

Hello:

Can anyone tell me if the barometric damper or draft controller on an oil furnace should ever tilt outward? Mine has a little tab on it that looks like it's there to prevent that, but...

Sorry to hear that,

I guess your next step should be to check for amperage draw, or jumpering the fan wires to see if it runs.

heat ?

I believe the fan motor on this unit (GE ?) has an internal overload that prevents it from damaging itself. Not sure, but something to look into. Let it cool down and see if it runs again.
