Next thing to see is if the piston is moving. Take out spark plug and turn the engine with a screwdriver in the plug hole and see it engine is turning.

unloader valve

You dad is probably right the unloader valve is the culprit. They get stuck and just let the water circulate but not close off to let it go thru the wand.

It sounds to me as if you have a timing issue...

It sounds to me as if you have a timing issue which means the flywheel key is probably sheared. I would check that and also it could be a valve problem. If it has overhead valves take off the valve...

when that flap got sucked in you could have sheared the flywheel key or at least bent it. Doubtful from that flap that the crankshaft is bent but I would check that key first.

Could be a few different things. Crankcase breather bad(gummed up) blown head gasket,bad rings all of these could cause blow by which is what you're getting.
