thank you, yes, that is note that got me thinking. It is permitted to have the rim joist (2x8) and the joists (2x6) attached to it be different heights? (or at least, it isn't excluded)

I should add, I know preference for majority is 2x6 isn't good for a freestanding deck, and 2x8 minimum... but please put that aside for now. This is whether this would meet the code.

Per subject. Can I have 2x8 rim joists, and 2x6 joists within?

if I built a deck using 2x6 joists, and obviously used (at a minimum) spacing for joists and beams per IRC... I can build a compliant...

thanks again, I should probably give up on trying to figure out the cantilever to get into that space. To pin a pier to the foundation I imagine would get expensive quick, its Illinois so 4' frost...
