The hi-limit should have been opening and closing and protecting the cutoff....

Give the top a light coating of vegetable oil and let it sit for a few hours then wipe it off.
Basically you are trying to simulate the wet look.

If the wire is stiff it could be that it is there to stop the pressure hose from kinking.

Note that these units do not add much water to the tub compared to agitator units.
