Yes should be the timer... On the sudden stop "dont put oil or any lube on the clutch" this will make it slip in the spin cycle.. the clutch releases the brake which is also what drives the basket...

From what i gather so far you removed the three...
From what i gather so far you removed the three screws in the back of drum.. You should have removed belt and reached in drum and hit it hard upward in the rear to knock out the ball in the soccket...
