Yes, it looks like that is what people use to keep the damper cracked open. That is a standard beam clamp, used in industrial buildings to hang pipe overhead.

Over the weekend I tested the clean & wax method. Didn't make any real improvement and what a stinky mess. And lots of work for a tiny closet... its a no go.
