It is a mercury T-stat, but not a round one.

When I open the front I see an adjustment which has printed on it "longer cycle" and graduations running from .15 to 1.0. Its currently set at .4.

If the ourput is mono sound, through the headphone jack, you can probably plug in a set of computer speakers. I did that in my RV with a headphone extention cable and set up the computer speakers...
