Most limits and thermal safety switches fail because they’ve been repetitively cycled, which they aren’t supposed to do.

There is no “topping up”.
Refrigerant isn’t consumed as the system operates. The refrigeration system is sealed. Which means if you need to put refrigerant in, there’s a leak somewhere.

Do them a favor. Shut off the air conditioner and only run the blower to thaw the coil. This will save the tech time when they get there. You can’t diagnose a unit while it’s frozen like that.

At that age your best investment is a new air...
