For priming new drywall in a basement, would you recommend Sherwin Williams primer, or something like Kilz, or for that matter any of the big box store brands (Behr, Valspar, etc)?

Yeah... looking back I would have done the same thing had I given it forethought... using foamboard on the foundation, then the rest as mentioned.
