how would I do that? I have removed the fan. The casing was very warm. Does that imply that there was power to the unit?. There are no exposed contacts to probe.

yes, they all come that way. Pre-fab wiring with about 30" of conduit and 3 6" wires. It looks like it might just be long enough. fingers crossed; I'll know tomorrow

Nobody is answering so I'll just close this out by saying the new board fixed the problem. For $75 it's not really worth my time to try to figure out what was wrong with the board.
