I was thinking a dry look sealer too. Not a fan of the wet look. You mention the hydrophobicity. Does it do the same on the polymeric joints, or does the water soak in as usual?

The smell comes from the bathroom ceiling fan or sometimes from the adjacent laundry room ceiling fan (both on main floor of 2-story home). Or sometimes both at the same time.

I'll have to take it apart to see the coils (will do). In the meantime, if the refrigerant is low or leaking out this would probably not be a DIY fix right? If there is a leak then it has to be found...
