Thanks for the hints!

I used a 2lb sledgehammer, then after cleanup, used a prybar to slip under a corner of the backerboard, and PRESTO! Everything is gone down to the sub floor - ready for the new hardwoods!

All is OK!!

Grout stain was the answer. We got some stain exactly the color of the grout we should have used. It took about three hours to apply, but we are happy with the color, and the grout is sealed. :)

Removing the tile was accomplished using 2lb hammer. Any suggestions on how to remove the cement backerboard? The adhesive is stuck to the backerboard, and I can't see where it is nailed/screwed...
