first reason is when roof vent freezes at 25 below.....the tank can still breathe... but honestly I think it can help to allow fuller flow down to the leach pipes and better gas flow up to the roof...

kit at Home Depot with 2 t stats and 2 elements, 31$... I didnt install elements ,just the T stats and all seems to be well. ...
