As some have already said - lift and look! Especially when you said there was a dip at the window ( as in, its been leaking and damaging the floor that no one sees...)
You could be seeing poor...

key is the bonding ability

I would scrape the wall first to ensure you get a good bond. Not sure how the sand finish would hold up. Not worried about being real smooth like I would for wallpaper since that will show anything...

noise is not your friend!

I have experience the noise before but from a circuit breaker that was slowly frying. Never tripped but when found, half of it had completely melted from the heat.

Kerdi over hardi backer board

Doing a walk in shower. Have a plastic vapor barrier over the insulation - then hardi backer - taped and seamed - ready for the schluter pan and drain - and planned to cover the hardi with the kerdi...
