I agree that it's way too high at the peak of the roof. The ductwork is probably hot to the touch. Get it lower or use Flex with a higher R Rating.

Did it trip the breaker? You may have a dead short somewhere. You definitely smoked something. That Magic Chef unit is 30+ years old. There's not much life left in it.

Remember: your Hi & low pressure switches, safeties all run through your 24 volt circuit. Trust me, start there. It could be a number of issues but we see this happen everyday.
