Darker definitely

Black or a much darker stain on the bottom looks more contemporary to me. My personal preference is contemporary... If that's the look you like go with it.

Thanks czizzi. That makes sense. Would the same go for the carpet or am I better off still installing that after the installing/painting the drywall and baseboard. (Less need for drop clothes.)
