I don't think it matters whether the stopcock is open or shut, 'cos the pipe is terminated at the top with a screwed in cap with teflon.

And yes I agree with you. It can't be a good thing to enclose and seal the condenser on the side of the refrigerator.
It must be trapping some of the heat inside the case and transfer some of that...
