A lot of people look at water softeners as a luxury, but they are a good investment to protect your plumbing. Look into one if you can. Good LucK!

You can do it that way. Is the 3 inch vent connecting to the 4 inch with a tee? If so, I would change the tee to a combo/wye (it has a sweep) that way the poops wont splatter and muck up the pipe...
