You get more support going deeper, assuming a 40" post, I'd go 24" deep!

Painted walls get tiled all the time. I'd just scuff sand and set your tiles.

TSP residue can cause adhesion issues with paint, I don't know if the same is true for thinset.

50 gallons? LOL. It must not rain there very often. I agree, you will have trouble with clogging is you use anything smaller than 4". You might also have ventilation problems if you reduce it...

Personally.... I wouldn't run anything smaller than the 4".
