I just spray down everything with purple power cleaner and Pressure wash. It may not start at first with water on the plug wire and all but as soon as it dries it should be fine. Water won't hurt it.

Even running it until it stalls leaves some residual gas in the carb. Many carbs have a drain screw so that you can drain the last bit out. I highly recommend doing that or carb problems are likely....

You could take an old t-shirt, cut a piece out and wrap it over the entire filter base and use a zip tie behind it to hold it in place and oil the shirt. The oil will attract and catch the particles...
