I put a 2x4 down in the hole at an angle, and the count went from 6 to 3, so apparently they used it to get out. It has since then rained a bunch and the hole completely flooded, so they're gone now.

You may be able to remove the plate that covers the overflow but there most likely is no access to it. It's basically like a standard bathtub in that to access that area if there is no access panel...
