Okay, so because my controller does not allow for a third wire. Only two wires connect, so my only option is to use batteries and wires R/RC and W.

Thank you. You are exactly correct. If I had looked a little closer at the schematic of the controller it shows 120 Vac / 24 Vac on the transformer. My "senior" moment.....
