after i removed the black wire from the 3 way switch and capped it off, the dimmer now has power and works fine, but the smart switch is no longer getting power... no luck yet.

The new switch is a dimmer from Lutron with a remote control. The light bulb in the ceiling fan was a CFL spiral type, and that was why the crazy flickering was happening.
