Cannot remove bump knob on Ryobi 1 cordless trimmer

Went to remove bump knob and all she does is spin (it is left hand thread), I can isolate the reel but cannot get the button to come off, think i have a broken threaded shaft?

Since all else is constant, I am assuming the internal T-STAT is sensing an overheat and shutting here down until a non-critical condition is sensed. Thanks for all input.
