I'm not sure what you mean... the old stat had one pair of wires going to the furnace and one pair running to a 24v transformer for the clock... I'm currently only using the pair going to the furnace.

Ok but does that mean that the thermostat is being powered by batteries full time? If there was an optional way of hard-wiring it, I'd like to do that and just use the batteries as back-up.

Ok like I said I have a very old Honeywell t-stat. It had 4 wires coming out of the wall. 2 reds and 2 whites. One pair of those ran a clock. The old t-stat will run the furnace with just two wires....
