Do boilers produce less heat output as they age?

I have a 1987 Vaillant gas boiler (80,000 BTU input) with cast iron heat exchanger. Would this boiler have used less gas than now to produce the same amount of hot water or heat (just house heating)?...

Stainless steel heat exchangers

Are any of the stainless steel heat exchangers used in boilers made in the USA? Does any boiler manufacturer produce their own heat exchangers (not counting cast iron)? Thanks

Thanks for the informative replies. I was just thinking theoretically about air replacement. At the moment I am not replacing my boiler. It is good to know that it is only minimal savings.

Combustion air

If an old boiler uses inside air from a basement for combustion, would that result in air being sucked into a house from the outside for replacement? If so, would a new boiler with an intake pipe for...

DOE Efficiency

I guess it was regional standards. I couldn't think of the exact term. Last year at a home improvement show in Milwaukee there was a heating contractor that was passing out a leaflet describing the...

DOE Efficiency

Maybe I misstated what I wanted to know. There was supposed to be restrictions on what boilers could be installed in the "northern" part of the USA. I think boilers had to have a rating of at least...

DOE Efficienct Requirements

What happened with the DOE boiler efficiency requirements that were supposed to be implemented on May 1, 2013? Are they being enforced? Thanks

Forced air vs boiler replacement considerations

Do people with forced air systems have the same issues to consider when replacing a furnace as those with boilers? By this I mean the need for a heat loss calculation, outdoor reset, size of...

Consumers viewpoint

Like you, I have analyzed boiler replacement from every angle. Mod-con boilers do not have a good rate of ROI. I think the ROI should be 6 years or less.
My payback period would be 10 - 15 years....

What causes a boiler to modulate its burner?

My guess would be an outdoor reset. If so, what determines the amount of modulation? How does the modulation match up with the house heat loss at outside temperatures that are above the design...

New Lennox Boiler

Does anyone know anything about a new (supposedly) Lennox high efficiency boiler, model GWM-IE ? Does Lennox make their own boilers? Thanks

Temperature Measurement

My Infrared thermometer doesn't give good readings on bare copper pipe. I sprayed black paint, about the size of a quarter, on it. The reading accuracy improved.

Combustion air and exhaust gas

Today's question is in two parts. When the exhaust from a high efficiency boiler vented out a sidewall hits outside air does it always naturally rise? Would a boiler with sealed combustion air reduce...

If my boiler was at the end of its life, the return on investment would not be questionable.

However, when is the end of a boiler's life? All I ever do is have an annual service/inspection. The...

High Efficiency Boiler Return On Investment

Has anyone actually calculated the ROI or the number of years for payback on a high efficiency boiler?

I have averaged 760 therms annually for the past ten years to heat my 1 1/2 story house in...

Ductless Split My Opinion

As a homeowner with hot water baseboard heat, I too have been considering a mini split system. We now use two window units that do not cool the whole house. I am against a system in the attic as we...

Problem Solved

Today I had a different heating company check my boiler. The burners were in need of a good cleaning. Heat exchanger was not clogged up. Post cleaning CO was checked with two different analyzers and...

boiler maintenance

I have had service people perform maintenance on a semi regular basis, although I can't say I have witnessed anyone expose the heat exchanger and clean it. I will try a different heating contractor....

High CO Reading

I recently had a home energy audit. The carbon monoxide reading for my 24 year old Vaillant GA92-80 natural gas boiler was 496 ppm. I was told that is way too high. Would the problem be gas valve,...
