Replacement hose size for pressure washer

I have a Troy Bilt, 3000 psi, pressure washer. The original hose, I think, was 1/4 inch. I have since replaced it with a 25 ft, 5/16 inch hose, and don't really notice any difference in washing...

Simple question: should I avoid adding the powered salt at the bottom of the bag when I add a bag of pellets to the water softener?
